Some state tax refunds delayed until July

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If you haven't received your Mississippi state income tax refund, there's a problem with it. Some refunds are being delayed due to an increase in the amount of review by the Department of Revenue.

At the Raymond office, high tech equipment is scanning your tax return. If there are questions, it's kicked out for a closer look by trained tax examiner.

"If you haven't received your tax refund back from Mississippi there is a problem with it," said spokesman Kathy Waterbury. "There is a problem with the return which means we have to fix it. It doesn't mean that your refund is not ever going to get to you or you are not going to get a refund. It may be adjusted. It may be more, it may be less."

Extra precautions are saving money, 10 million dollars last year alone. But the hitch is the process is slowed down by errors that have to be double checked before a check is cut.

The delays could be attributed to simple things, transposing a social security number, putting down the wrong address, even a math error. The Department of Revenue has 90 days by law to get refunds in the mail.  That deadline is July 15th.
