RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The annual observances to honor this nation's war dead started Friday morning with a ceremony in Ridgeland. People gathered to honor those who have given their lives to protect this country in wars dating back to 1917.

A wreath was laid at crosses representing World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the desert wars of the 21st century.

The featured speaker for the occasion was retired Colonel Dennis Smith of the Mississippi Army National Guard, who is also retired as WLBT News Director,"

"This country has paid an enormous price to resolve that we are going to be the land of the free." said Smith.

Major General Erik Hearon gave us some of the history of Memorial Day.

"It goes back to right after the Civil War, in Columbus, Mississippi, when the ladies of the town decorated the graves," said Hearon. "They started with the Confederate graves but they realized that it was really for everybody."

About 150 people turned out in Ridgeland to honor this nation's war dead, in the beginning of a string of such ceremonies in the metropolitan area over the weekend and Monday.
