MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson State University ushers in a new era with expansion of classes into Madison. A ribbon cutting and grand opening was held Wednesday at the Galleria Parkway.

Crowds toured the first floor educational facility of the new campus. It is designed to accommodate working professionals, returning students or collegiate new comers.

There will be six classrooms to accommodate rotating schedules.

Classes begin Wednesday with more than 300 students expected for the summer session.

JSU President Dr. Carolyn Meyers thanked all the government agencies and organizations who supported the move from elected officials to the Institutions of Higher Learning to the school's leadership team.

She said they all recognized that the university is a special place.

"Learning transcends all kinds of boundaries and all people have the ability to dream and recognize and acknowledge that if you want to dream, Jackson State is the place to come to help make your dreams come true," Meyers said.

"I feel we're forming a bond, and I think this bond will only grow stronger as the years go by. Thank you JSU for choosing Madison county," said Madison County District 2 Supervisor Ronny Lott.

Many in attendance noted the absence of city representatives, including Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler, at the grand opening.
