JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson voters have elected a new mayor. Chokwe Lumumba has been elected the next mayor of the City of Jackson, according to preliminary results.

With 100% of precincts reporting, Lumumba claims the General Election with 86%, or 20,835 votes. Leading up to the Runoff Election against Jonathan Lee just two weeks ago, the city councilman and attorney state that his platform has been and will remain equality and human rights for the residents of Jackson.

As for Lumumba's first move for the City of Jackson as new mayor, the 65-year-old says financial growth for Jackson residents will be key to his success as mayor.

"What I like to see, if people who didn't have it yesterday, have it today. I want to see people who weren't getting paid much yesterday, I want to see salaries go up. I want to see business that didn't exist yesterday come into existence tomorrow. And those are the things that I think [are] going to help brighten Jackson's future and also make Jackson attractive to the outside world," states Lumumba.

Lumumba defeated three independent candidates Francis P. Smith, Jr. , Richard C. Williams and Cornelius Griggs.
