Sleep problems increase heart risk in women

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Researchers say lack of quality sleep in women with heart problems tends to make the disease worse.

They have found poor sleep raises the inflammation levels. Doctors say inflammation is a contributor to heart disease. And lack of sleep tends to raise the risk of disease progression. The effect is not seen in men.

Researchers believe it results from lower estrogen levels in women.

The study is published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research.
