YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The flying carp fish population has been greatly increased in the Oxbow Lakes of the Mississippi Delta by the flood of 2011. They originally came from Asia, but they have been around in the Delta for many years.

Experts say they become more visible when the water gets lower.

One Oxbow Lake was once a part of the Yazoo River, near Satartia. It's called Lake George, and is located in Yazoo County.

"They came up into these backwaters in the Delta and actually had a big spawn," said Fisheries Biologist Ryan Jones of Madison. "And so their numbers definitely increased after the flood. They have a real bony head and if they hit you in the head, they could break a nose or give you a concussion. They could cause damage to your body."

Flying carp weigh anywhere from five to 20 pounds and can jump several feet out of the water and into a boat. They are dangerous if you are running fast.
