PARCHMAN, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An inmate at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman was fatally stabbed Tuesday.

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Kelvin Bowen, 35, was pronounced dead at the prison hospital around 1 p.m.

Fellow inmate Roderick Roshund Lewis, 31, is accused of attacking Bowen with a sharp instrument in the hallway of a maximum security unit. Bowen was reportedly going to see a case manager at the time.

A correctional officer suffered a dislocated thumb while trying to break up the two inmates, according to MDOC.

MDOC Commissioner Christopher Epps says an initial investigation revealed Lewis was not strip searched or restrained properly. Epps said policy and procedure weren't followed and disciplinary action will be taken when the investigation into the incident is complete.

According to MDOC, Bowen and Lewis have each been incarcerated multiple times.

Bowen was serving 14 years. He was sentenced to one year for simple assault on a police officer in Sunflower County and 13 years for aggravated assault and three years for shooting into a dwelling, both in Chickasaw County, according to MDOC.

Lewis is serving two life sentences for murder and armed robbery out of Warren County. He was convicted in September 2006 of killing a man he had worked for in a roofing business in Vicksburg.

Lewis has received 60 disciplinary actions since his incarceration, according to MDOC.
