SOUTHAVEN, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Southaven Mayor Greg Davis is leaving office early with extra money. But where is it coming from?

The money comes from the state's retirement system. Mayor Davis plans to leave his office to incoming Mayor Darren Musselwhite on June 28.

Olive Branch Mayor Sam Rikard will wait until July 1. The difference in just a couple of days? Money.

"I was elected to a 4 year term and I'm going to serve every day of it," said Mayor Rikard.

Mayor Sam Rikard has been in office for four terms. He will hand over the reigns to Scott Phillips on July 1 when his term is scheduled to end.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis said that he and Darren Musselwhite agreed on June 28.

"If I wait until July 1 when they're sworn in, then my retirement check won't come until August 1. The cost of living check, the 13th check as it's sometimes referred to, won't come in until 2015 instead of 2014," said Mayor Davis.

Davis said without any income coming in, his decision to leave early was a financial decision, one that he made months ago before the election.

Across town, Mayor Rikard said he may lose money out of his pocket by waiting until July 1 but he feels committed to serving until the last day.

"If I was going to retire on June 28 then my retirement check would be about $750 extra. That would come in December and I won't get that," said Mayor Rikard.

Horn Lake Mayor Nat Baker was under the weather but said he plans to leave office at midnight just after June 30.
