Just days after 2-year-old Knowledge Carter Ducksworth drowned in a bathtub, family, friends, and the community remembered the toddler at a candlelight vigil Sunday evening.
A toddler was rushed to the hospital Friday after emergency dispatchers received a call of a possible drowning around 2:30 p.m. at Cedar Crest Apartments on Cedar Lane in Jackson.
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart says the death of a Jackson 2-year-old has been ruled an accidental drowning. It's something the toddler had been through before.
Just days after Knowledge Carter Ducksworth drowned in a bathtub, family, friends, and the community remembered the toddler at a candlelight vigil Sunday evening.
At least 150 people came out to light candles and paper lanterns at Raines Park in west Jackson. Organizers say it was a time for the community to rally around Knowledge's family and show their support. The youngster's emotional mother said she was grateful for the turnout.
"Knowledge was a very, very, very, very big part of me. That was my best friend and a piece of me right now is gone. And I just wanna say thank y'all for being here for me," said Latoya Cuff.
The toddler's funeral is scheduled for Saturday. Family and friends are setting up a fundraiser to help with expenses.
Walter Ducksworth and his wife, Betty, have fond memories of their grandson Knowledge Ducksworth. His nickname was Mr. Carter.
"He loved everybody and he always had a smile on his face, very seldom to see Carter without a smile on his face," Ducksworth explained.
Ducksworth said Knowledge, who was the youngest of three boys, was inquisitive, he loved everybody, had a good sense of humor and was very polite.
"He always would come in give me a hug and a kiss and say 'I love you,' and I'd say 'I love you, too' and if you give him something its 'thank-you,'" said Ducksworth.
On Friday afternoon Knowledge was rushed to the hospital from the Cedar Crest Apartment Complex. Jackson police said Knowledge's mom stepped away briefly from the bathtub and when she returned the toddler was unresponsive.
"The mother called this morning about five something and said he passed away," said Ducksworth.
The Hinds County coroner said the 2-year-old was taken to the hospital about a year ago for almost drowning in a bathtub. The corner said she's not sure who Knowledge was with when he almost drowned last year. Knowledge's grandmother said she's bathed her grandson before and never left him alone.
"I bathed him, took him out, and then I dressed him before I left that bathroom," said Mrs. Ducksworth.
Knowledge's grandfather said God makes no mistakes and he looks forward to the day when he'll see his "Mr. Carter," smiling again.
"I said the Lord must have been short on angels so he called my Carter," said Ducksworth.
