JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some bright young ladies are sitting in the classroom in Jackson, even though it's summer time.

New Hope Baptist Church on Watkins Drive is holding what they say is the first engineering camp exclusively for African-American girls in the nation. On Monday, the girls learned a few technical vocabulary words. That will prepare them to build a few high-tech toys, and compete against each other for best engineer on Friday.

A total of 360 girls ages 8 through 12 are learning from engineering college students.

One class of 4th grade girls is working on a gravity cruiser, which is a glider.

"We have 50 mentors that we bring in from across the country that work with these students... to expose students to engineering, the math fields," says Quiana Piggee, Coordinator for the National Society of Black Engineers.
