JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Hinds County Detention Center has been the scene of some dangerous altercations in the last several days.

An inmate was found dead Saturday after being attacked and beaten to death in his cell, but it's not the only violent disturbance.

Sheriff Tyrone Lewis confirmed that at least two guards suffered minor injuries in the past few days. The detention officers received medical treatment but did not require hospital admission.

"The first incident was a gang related issue that was controlled by the guards. A few guards got a few cuts here and there trying to correct it," confirms Sheriff Lewis. "The other was where inmates refused to go back into their cells. In order to put them back in their cells they had to be physically handled."

There have been three separate violent episodes including Saturday's beating death of 56-year-old Larry David McLaurin. Investigators said McLaurin was attacked by his cell mate, 50-year-old Elton McClaurin.

"These two guys had a confrontation that was isolated and confined to their particular cell," stated Sheriff Lewis.

Sheriff Lewis administered the oath to graduates of the Rankin County Law Enforcement Officer Training Institute Tuesday afternoon. Eight of the detention officers will be joining his staff.

There have been complaints of poor jail conditions, which some believe lead to prisoner unrest, but Lewis said the maintenance director is responsible for upkeep of the facility and work orders for repairs had been placed.

"There are certain parts of it that does not have air, but it is being corrected as we speak," said the sheriff.

Pod-C, damaged in July during a riot, is under construction and will house 72 inmates in 36 cells.

Sheriff Lewis said the facility is safe and was adequately staffed during all the incidents.
