JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Construction workers are trying to beat the heat as they work around the clock to complete a major interstate project in Hinds County.

Work on the Elton Road Bridge is just a small portion of the five-phase McDowell Road to Byram widening re-construction project on Interstate 55. The bridge is being elevated by two feet to meet current minimum clearance standards.

"They have hydraulic jacks under there, they can only raise each section about an inch at a time to not over stress the bridge it's a very very slow process it take about five weeks to raise the bridge up two feet," said project engineer Janie Bass.

The Elton Road bridge will be out of use through September. The entire construction project should be finished by November 2015.
