BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It is the first holiday of the summer and communities across the state are celebrating Independence Day.

In Brandon Wednesday night a large choir with more than 150 people and a 60-piece orchestra performed patriotic songs.

There was also watermelon, a pie eating contest, hamburgers, hot dogs, sno-cones and a patriotic parade through Shiloh Park for children and their families.

"This is our first time to do a patriotic event for the City of Brandon. Several churches joined their choirs and came to us and said we want to do a patriotic concert in Shiloh Park on July 3rd. So we thought that was a great idea and said let's make it a community wide event," Tahya Dobbs, the events coordinator for the City of Brandon told us.

The choir performed a patriotic medley -- United We Stand In Tribute to God and Country. The evening was topped off with fireworks.
