JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson's new mayor has officially announced his choices for police and fire chiefs. During his first news conference held in the Ceremonial Office, Mayor Chokwe Lumumba introduced Lindsey Horton as head of the state's largest police force while Willie Owens will serve as fire chief.

The mayor talked about the long service and respect each man has among the ranks in their departments.

Horton, 61, was promoted from deputy chief and joined the force in 1985.

Owens, 64, retired as division chief in 2005.

"We want to welcome both of them. They're gonna be pillars in a very important administration that we're gonna use to start our rise when you talk about the City of Jackson moving forward," said Mayor Lumumba.

A Special Meeting of the council immediately followed the news conference.

Horton and Owens were both on the agenda for confirmation, but those hearings will instead be held during the July 18 council meeting.
