MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Residents can expect cuts from the Shelby County Commission after commissioners voted down a nine-percent property tax hike – leaving an unbalanced budget.
Without a tax hike, Shelby County needs to make $60 million in cuts to balance the budget.
"I think it's great. I don't think we need anymore taxes in this town," said Shelby County resident Beverly McNamee.
Some taxpayers were pleased with the vote while others supported higher taxes.
"Public safety is my concern," said Shelby County resident Spencer Sutherland.
Many residents against the tax hike think lawmakers' salaries should be put on the chopping block. But others said it could be the county's only shot at making up for property value losses without making cuts.
Three line items would likely take the hit: employee jobs, public safety and school funding.
One commissioner recommended turning over Headstart to the schools or a nonprofit.
"The director there makes over $120,000 per year," said commissioner Terry Roland.
Another commissioner said the county should get money from the City of Memphis – amid a court fight over school money. But one commissioner pointed out the county spends $10.2 million on administration and cuts could start at the top.
The Shelby County Commission will hold committee meetings to discuss the tax rate. We likely will not know the final impact until the end of summer.
