(WMC-TV) - A new report shows infant mortality in the city of Memphis dropped significantly. The Memphis mayor has even called it one of the city's most urgent problems.
At one point, the infant mortality rate in Shelby County had been compared to third world countries by leaders at the Urban Child Institute. Although a report from the institute this year reveals several big developments. Among them is a 25 percent decrease in the number of babies who died in the last two years.
Leaders say it is a matter of awareness and public will. They say an increase in education is helping make strides.
Another part of the report that could be tied to the drop in infant mortality is a record low in the number of moms who give birth without proper prenatal care.
