JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi State Department of Health reports three members of a Mississippi family have been diagnosed with a rare but serious disease linked to buffalo fish.

Haff disease is caused by a toxin in buffalo fish that can cause a muscle injury syndrome called rhabdomyolysis. These are the first recorded cases of the disease in Mississippi. Since 1984, about 30 cases have been reported in the U.S.

According to the department of health, the family cooked and consumed buffalo fish caught in Mississippi waters.

Symptoms, which typically happen within 12 hours of consuming the fish, include muscle weakness and pain, dry mouth, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and dark urine. According to the MSDH, intravenous fluids and other treatments can help resolve symptoms.

Health officials say cooking buffalo fish doesn't reduce the risk of disease.

Many people consume buffalo fish on a regular basis without injury, but anyone who develops symptoms of Haff disease should seek medical care, according to the department of health.
