RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

When a raging fire destroyed 12 units at the Lakeshore Pointe Apartments on the Ross Barnett Reservoir July 3, Lisa Jenkins Dunn was told her Jack Russell Terrier mix had probably died in the blaze.

Lisa and her daughter Taylor Dunn went back to the apartment complex every day after the fire in hopes of finding Raney. Then on Sunday -- 11 days after the fire-- they got an unbelievable call. A manager at the apartment complex saw the tiny dog moving around in one of the lower units that hadn't been completely destroyed by the fire.

It's unclear how the small dog survived so long in the apartment. Many people thought he had died in the fire.

"We asked the firemen what had happened. He said there is not a good chance that he survived," Taylor Dunn said. "We came down here every day and walked around to see if we could see him so we always had hope that he was still alive, and we never actually saw him die so we always had that hope that he could still be alive. So we got the call and we were just elated and I mean we are just real happy."

Raney is believed to be about a year and a half old. Taylor Dunn rescued him from the Humane Society in Oxford and gave the dog to her mother.

The small dog suffered burn wounds and is now being treated by a vet. They are calling it the "Christmas Miracle in July" that Raney survived the fire and was found alive.
