For 20 years a Madison company has been providing fire protection for businesses and government agencies all over Mississippi. Since 1993 Hi-Tek Fire Sprinklers Inc. has been helping developers meet national and state fire safety requirements by designing and installing fire sprinkler systems.
David Harris, Junior is the son of Hi-Tek's owner, David Harris, Senior, who shared with us what their industry is all about.
"People think it's mainly for protection of their assets or their building, but when you get down to it, it's about protecting lives and saving lives," David Harris, Jr. said.
They do work all over Mississippi and one of the biggest jobs they have right now is the Outlets of Mississippi in Pearl. Working with Yates Construction, Hi-Tek is installing 2,500 sprinklers at the outdoor mall which is scheduled to open in the fall.
The big job means job security for an industry dependent on contracts. Hi-Tek Vice President, Kenneth Self, shared with us what a project, such as the Pearl outlets means for his 18 employees.
"There's a lot of pride especially owning your own business," Self said. "There's a lot of pressure too, because you're not just employing these guys, but you're employing their families, and at the end of the day they're looking at you to provide them with a paycheck and provide them with a steady job."
Certainly good news as economic uncertainty continues to loom over commercial development.
"When things are bad and people are laying off and we're continuing to work and we're continuing to do good there is a lot of pride," Self said.
