MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A registered sex offender is accused of placing a Craigslist ad for a housekeeper and then raping the woman who responded to his ad.

Bond for Arnold Briggs, III is set at $80,000.

Investigators say he lured the prospective housekeeper into his home on Macon Road in Eads with an ad posted to Craigslist.

"She went over to the house and she began performing the duties," said Chip Washington, Shelby County Sheriff's Office. "He then began to sexually assault her."

According to an affidavit of complaint, she did not consent to the contact. He then offered her $50 for an additional two hours.

It turns out that Briggs is already on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's convicted sex offender registry as the result of a 1987 sexual battery conviction and a 1991 rape case.

Internet deals requiring an in-person meeting have not gone well in the Mid-South lately.

One man was shot three times. Two others were robbed at gunpoint.

What happened in the home on Macon Road is another word of warning about offers from the Internet.

"We live in tough economic times and folks are looking for ways and opportunities to make a little extra money. Unfortunately for her, she was the victim of a crime," said Washington.

If you are buying and selling something online and must meet in person, suggest to meet at a police precinct if possible. If you have to go to someone's house, police suggest you follow your gut instinct.
