Art gallery gets creative to make exhibits fun for kids

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A new art exhibit is on display at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. And the fine arts museum is working to make it fun for kids.

Action News 5's Lindsey Brown admired two new Pierre-Auguste Renoir paintings on loan to the gallery until Labor Day. The first time they looked at the art, they were with the gallery's director. The second time, they took it in with a group of summer campers.

"We are known for our own impressionist pictures," said Director Kevin Sharpe, Dixon Gallery. "These two Renoirs are from the 1870s, which was the most important moment for impressionism."

Director Kevin Sharp knows everything about the two paintings: the Umbrella, painted in 1878 and the Loge, painted in 1874.

They are beautiful but anyone who has worked with children knows their attention span doesn't last long. The folks at Dixon Gallery seem to have found a way to make sure art is interesting -- even to kids.

The children are encouraged to use their imagination.

"We look at the pictures and try and figure out what they are trying to do and things like that," said one camper.

Anything goes.

"She's trying to cool off, she's sitting down and looking at the beautiful weather," said another.
