JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson Police Department is mourning the loss of another officer today.

The officer, identified as 35-year-old Bruce Jacobs, was killed when either he or his vehicle was struck by a motorist traveling southbound on I-55 in front of Kroger Saturday.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart confirmed Jacobs' identity.

Jackson's new Police Chief Lindsey Horton said Jacobs received a call about 1:30 p.m. Saturday about debris on I-55 south. Officer Jacobs arrived on the scene to find a barbeque grill had fallen onto the roadway.

Jacobs was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the officer was injured and is being treated at UMC.

Jacobs had been on the force with the Jackson Police Department for five years. He was a Precinct 4 officer and was a part of 45th Recruit Class.

Chief Horton said the investigation is ongoing.
