JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Police held a press conference Sunday afternoon about the death investigation of one of its own.

Officer Bruce Jacob was killed Saturday afternoon after he was struck by another vehicle on I-55 south, near the Northside Drive Exit.

Chief Lindsey Horton says Jacob was placing a grill, that had been in traffic, into the trunk of his cruiser when the crash occurred.

"Another vehicle came and struck him as he was standing behind his car, and there was no evidence of skid marks, which would indicate to me and us that the individual may not have seen him until it was too late to react," Horton said.

The driver of the vehicle that hit Jacob remains hospitalized.

Horton says no charges have been filed against the unidentified driver of the car, as of yet.

Jacob was a five year veteran with the police department.

Horton said the department will review policies involving debris removal from the interstate, but says Jacob did nothing wrong.

Horton added plans for a memorial or funeral service for Jacob have not been finalized.
