JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba has been excused from a trial, after he told the court "health reasons" would prevent him from representing his client. This happened Friday in Oktibbeha County where he is representing a man facing murder charges.

His client, Archie Quinn, is accused of killing a woman and injuring a man during a home invasion. Lumumba withdrew just three days before the case was to go to trial.

Mayor Lumumba was allowed to step down as counsel, after entering two motions to withdraw. In the first motion, Lumumba cited his duties as mayor didn't allow him enough time to practice private law.

After his first motion was rejected, Lumumba entered a motion citing health reasons, which Oktibbeha Circuit Court Judge Lee Howard, allowed.

The judge sealed medical documentation presented to the court by the Mayor. The Mayor noted he needed to have "a serious medial examination" in Jackson this week.

Last week during an interview, the Mayor talked candidly about his health.

"I had prostate cancer back in 1999, 2000. I had what they call breaky therapy where they put seeds in you, right at the prostate and that 100 percent cured my cancer at that time, but you always have to be vigilant about cancer coming back."

Today the Mayor's office released the following statement:

Mayor Lumumba is healthy and while he dispelled any questions or concerns regarding his health, he, as anyone, has routine medical examinations, check-ups and consultations which are private. There is nothing that was stated during the Archie Quinn case that would indicate that he is nothing short of healthy and fit to serve the people of Jackson.

Mayor Lumumba's co -counsel, Imhotep Alkebu-lan, was also excused by the judge. He now serves as Deputy City Attorney.
