Uncommon stomach bug reported in Midwest

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hundreds of people in Midwestern states have come down with a severe stomach bug and fresh produce may be to blame.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 250 people have been infected with Cyclospora and ten have been hospitalized. The parasite is found in stool and causes stomach trouble that can last for weeks.

Preliminary interviews with sick patients suggest fresh produce or contaminated water could be to blame. However, they say consumers should still include these healthy foods in their diet -- just be sure to wash them thoroughly before eating.

Most of the cases have been reported in Iowa, Texas and Nebraska, but Wisconsin, Georgia and Connecticut have also seen patients.

The patients fell ill from mid-June to July but doctors don't know yet if the parasite has stopped spreading.
