Gum disease linked to dementia

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Bacteria caused by gum disease can get into the brain and now scientists think it may be associated with dementia.

Researchers in the U-K found signs of bacteria linked to gingivitis in 4 out of 10 samples of brain tissue from Alzheimer's patients. They didn't find any in brain samples taken from people who never had dementia.

This does not prove that gum disease causes dementia but does indicate a link. Gum disease has previously been linked to cardiovascular problems.

This study is from researchers at the University of Central Lancashire (UK) and is published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
