PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mothers across the world were encouraged to feed their infants during a minute of synchronized breastfeeding Saturday morning.

The event was called the Big Latch On, and mothers in 112 countries participated. The event is part of World Breastfeeding Week, which ends Wednesday.

In Pearl, moms joined women worldwide by breastfeeding their babies at 10:30 a.m. on the dot.

Organizers of the Big Latch On hope movements like this will remove negative attitudes about moms who nurse in public.

"It takes friends, families, communities to help women feel supported in breastfeeding especially nursing in public because babies need to be fed when they're hungry and it's not something that should be or moms should be shamed for doing," Amanda Jones said.
