Obesity deaths underestimated

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Obesity may be the cause of death in one out of five adults, which is much higher than previously estimated.

Researchers at Columbia University took a new approach to looking at obesity's effect on your risk of death. Instead of just looking at the age and weight of a person when they died, they took into account sex and race.

They found African American women had a one in four chance of dying from obesity and white women had a one in five chance.

They also say you need to take into account the fact that young adults today are exposed to obesity for longer periods of time than in years past. That will likely increase their risk of death as they deal with the effects of being overweight throughout their lifetime.the researchers say when you look at the numbers with those considerations in mind, the risk of dying from obesity goes up significantly.
