State mulls takeover of Claiborne County schools

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The state Board of Education has pulled back from revoking the accreditation of the Claiborne County schools, but only to consider a state takeover of the district.

The board announced Friday that it has voted in closed session Thursday to order the state's accrediting commission to determine whether there is a state of emergency in the school system. Such a finding could come at the board's September meeting, clearing the way for the state to depose the elected superintendent and board and appoint a state conservator.

Officials have been investigating the 1,800-student system since fall 2011. The inquiry started with questions over spending of federal funds, expanding to examine Claiborne County's compliance will all state standards.

Department of Education officials have wanted to move away from takeovers, instead revoking accreditation.
