JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In the fall of 1962, the college town of Oxford, Mississippi erupted in violence. At the center of the melee was James Meredith.

Meredith was an African-American attempting to register at the then all-white University of Mississippi, Ole Miss.

Meredith had the support of the federal government, but the magnolia state's refusal to let him in led to a showdown between state and federal authorities. Two people died and dozens were injured.

Meredith was eventually allowed entrance into Ole Miss.

Sunday marks 50 years since Meredith graduated from the university.

James Meredith sat down with our Katina Rankin.

Hear what he has to say about his graduation and the state of Mississippi now.

Tune in Sunday at 10 p.m. on WLBT.
