James Meredith's Ole Miss 50th Graduation Anniversary

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Sunday marks a huge milestone for James Meredith. It's the 50th anniversary of his graduation from Ole Miss.

Meredith sat down with our Katina Rankin to reflect on the journey that brought him to this day. He recalls bricks, lead pipes, bottles and Molotov cocktails, plus gunfire being fired at him while trying to become the first African-American to enroll in Ole Miss.

Meredith even talks about the bullet that struck him in the back. Here is what he says he learned through the process.

"Everybody want to see things change, but they don't want to be the one to rock the boat," Meredith said.

"I'm 80 plus years-old, and I don't know how much time I got left. But, I do know how ever many days it is, it's less than I already had. So, my God tells me that trying don't mean nothing. Either get the job done or stop using up my time," Meredith added.
