COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Bond was denied Monday for the man accused of killing the mother of his 6-year-old child in Copiah County.
Christopher Michael Smith appeared in Copiah County Justice Court in Hazlehurst for his arraignment Monday. He is charged with the murder of 38-year-old Nikisa Benson.
Smith's case will be presented to a grand jury.
Benson was shot and killed on her way home from work on Monticello Road in Copiah County Aug. 20. The scene is about four miles east of Hazlehurst.
Copiah County authorities say Benson's black Grand Prix was found stopped in the roadway and was still running and the door was open. Benson's body was found close by.
"She works with DHS and she got off about 5 p.m. Apparently she was headed home that way and when we go the call that's where we found the vehicle at," said Copiah County Chief Deputy Derrick Cubit. "It was a bullet hole found in her car. There were several shots fired at the scene. It was a high caliber weapon."
One of Benson's closest friends says the suspect in the case, Smith, was a "tormentor."
"He tormented her the last year of her life. He didn't want anyone else with her," Felix Davis said.
Davis says Benson filed numerous reports with the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department about Smith threatening her. Davis said Benson had an order of protection against Smith.
"She didn't fear a lot. She was tormented by this gentleman, but she was determined not to let him take the piece of her pie. And that was her house she has worked hard for and her life with her child. She was a fighter and she worked hard everyday," Davis said.
Davis, who has known Benson for 20 years, has a heavy heart.
"I actually introduced them years ago. To me to stand here today and know that might have took her life, but me and here have talked about it and I apologized several times because no one knew this guy was that devious," Davis said.
Benson's body is now at the Mississippi crime lab for an autopsy.
