JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Jackson police say the suspect wanted in a home invasion in Jackson last week turned himself in Tuesday night.
Vincent Smith is one of two suspects in the home invasion Wednesday in the 400 block of Saint Andrews Drive at the Jackson Country Club.
An alert officer helped solve the crime. The second
suspect, Jared Terry, is already behind bars.
Two men, armed with
guns, broke into the home. Neighbors say gunshots were fired
during the invasion. A number of items were taken, including the
Off-duty Police Officer Danny Hicks was
assisting a manager at the Grove Apartments with an apartment
inspection and noticed several items in an apartment. He talked it over
with fellow cop Mathew Magee, and they determined the goods came from
the house on St. Andrew's.
On Friday the JPD Narcotics
Unit was acting off drug hotline tip at the Grove
apartments. Magee advised the JPD Narcotics Unit about the items inside
an apartment. Eventually homicide detectives received consent to search
"He picked up on an unusual set of circumstances
in his mind. A great job by him. His police instincts kicked in. He
noticed that there was something there that looked out of place," said
Two people were arrested for drug misdemeanors there.
Police recovered an iPad engraved with the St. Andrews Drive victim's
name on it, jewelry, several TV's, and a 22-caliber pistol was recovered
from a trash bin.
Jared Terry was one of the two people arrested
on the drug charge. He was questioned in jail about the home invasion
and later confessed. He's charged with two counts of armed robbery, one
count of house burglary, and one count of auto theft.
say Terry led them to an abandoned residence at 2435 South Vernon Dr.
There the victim's stolen Infiniti was found stripped.
Investigators believe a chop shop was being operated there.
This isn't Vincent Smith's first brush with the law. He has been charged with more than a dozen crimes in at least two different jurisdictions in the past four months.
Vincent Smith is the man who authorities say used a scooter during house burglaries earlier this year.
Back in March, Jackson Police Assistant Chief Lee Vance told us 22-year-old Smith "is an example of a guy that we've been problems with for awhile. Right now, he's charged with six counts of house burglary in the Precinct 4 area."
However, looking at their current records, JPD says Smith was arrested for three counts of house burglary and two counts of possession of stolen property in March.
Vance says that's not unusual. Sometimes the charges change after a closer look at the evidence. Smith's bond for those offenses was $15,000 for the two house burglaries and $2,500 for stolen property. He was also arrested for felony possession of MDMA, or ecstasy, and felony possession of marijuana at that time.
Then, in August, Smith was arrested again for felony possession of marijuana, possession of narcotics and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. He was granted $26,000 bond for those charges.
Why was Smith let go again? According to the Hinds County District Attorney's office, the felony possession of marijuana charge carries a maximum of only three years in prison. Because of that, his bond could not be revoked despite the prior charges in March.
Smith is now accused in a home invasion Wednesday on St. Andrews Drive in Jackson.
We talked to Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith about repeat offenders getting back out on the street. In his research on Vincent Smith, he found a series of drug and weapons charges out of Madison County from July, two of which met the requirement to revoke bond. He says it's something the justice system runs into from time to time.
"What we can do is an NCIC can be provided at the initial appearance. Either a judge or the detective can notify the prosecutor and let one of us know this person has been out on bond, so we can revoke the person's bond if they're not eligible," Robert Smith said.
The Madison County Circuit Clerk's office did not have records of the July arrests on Smith when we called Tuesday.
