(WMC-TV) - Every school in Shelby County now has access to metal detecting wands. Interim school superintendent Dorsey Hopson says he met with Director Armstrong and Sheriff Oldham over the weekend; he says all three are committed to safety and security in school.
Some parents do not mind wanding students as young as kindergarteners, but others think it is a little much.
"If it's a regulation that they have to have for everyone else to be secure then I'm fine with that," said mother, Naterricka Gibson.
Hopson said every elementary school as of Monday has a hand wand. He made the announcement Friday in a press release following an incident where a gun discharged in a student's backpack on school property.
The district says how they will use the wands remains under construction, but each administration will have options as the district said in a statement:
"Schools will receive specific guidance on how they may implement this at their schools. Staff will be the ones administering it, but the implementation has not yet been finalized."
As some imaginations lead to images of full metal detectors like in an airport, but it is unlikely elementary schools will look like that. But Superintendent Dorsey Hopson didn't rule it out entirely.
"It pains me that now we're going to be wanding kids, and we may ultimately have to put some metal detectors in elementary schools," said Hopson.
Hopson says school security, including wanding students, is not a one-size-fit-all solution for every school in a massive district.
"All of our security plan is based on a case by case," he said. "What's happened at this school? What's happening in this neighborhood?"
Hopson says they will implement whatever changes in security they deem necessary. He says he will meet with Armstrong and Oldham periodically throughout the school year.
