Hail damage repairs going slowly at Whitfield

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Work is still underway at the Whitfield State Mental Hospital, in Rankin County, to repair hail damage done March 18th.

Some of the worst of the damage was done to some of the old buildings. Many of them, first built in the 1930's, had their roofs destroyed by the storm. Blue roofs were everywhere to protect the interiors from damage.

The project to rebuild the roofs is being handled by the state Department of Finance and Administration and is going painfully slow. So far, only 24 of the 60 buildings damaged are under contract for repair.

"Well, there haven't been any major problems besides just getting the repairs done," said Public Relations Manager Adam Moore. "No patients or residents were displaced, or anything like that. And it was just a matter of repairing the immediate dangers, like the broken glass and everything. Which we had crews out here working over night the day the storm happened, making sure immediate dangers were repaired and rectified."

There are still 36 more buildings to be repaired. Work on the 24 now under contract is expected to take until November.
