(WMC-TV) - Two shootings occurred after two different high school football games this weekend leaving some Mid-Southerns distraught and concerned about safety at what should be family-friendly events.

One dies after 'shootout' at North Mississippi school

In Panola County, the shooting after the game was deadly. North Mississippi investigators say an increased gang problem in the area may have played a role in the murder; they have so far charged two people in connection with the shooting following a Panola High football game.

"There was, for lack of a better word, a shootout that occurred at the school," said District Attorney John Champion. "I'm sick of the fact that these young kids today believe the answer to everything is firearms."

Champion announced Monday that Darius McNiel, Quinterious Mabry, and Jonathan Haynes are charged with capital murder in 15-year-old Roderick Bobo's death. Champion said two groups were arguing after the football game, several shots were fired from guns that were likely inside the football game full of students and families.

"It's obvious from our investigation that with them pre-arming themselves prior to them going to the game that they felt like something was going to happen," said Champion.

When asked if Bobo was armed, Champion would only say that there were four people with guns, and three of those people have been charged.

A spokesperson for the school district said none of the suspects were enrolled at the school. There will be extra security and police presence at future football games in the county.

A fourth person was arrested for having a gun on campus. After the incident at the game, there was a shooting at a nearby club and a man with a gun at a nearby elementary school. Arrests have been made in both cases and authorities are trying to see if the incidents are related.

Spectators scramble from shots fired at stadium

"It's crazy," said parent Natasha Moore. "It makes you wonder are we going to be safe here? Just going to a game, is it going to be safe? Are me and my family going to be safe?"

A second shooting victim was injured after a Whitehaven Football game Saturday. He was shot in the leg after the game between the stadium and the parking lot.

The shooter is still on the loose.

Investigators say there are hundreds of possible witnesses. Many people who were at the game heading back to their cars had to scramble at the sound of gunfire.

"It definitely could've been worse than it was, especially with the large crowd that was exiting the field at that time, but either way it's a tragedy still," said Mikey Keaton with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

SCSO and Shelby County Schools provided security for the football game.

Both the sheriff and school district say they are constantly looking for ways to improve school security, which includes extracurricular activities like sporting events. They will review this incident to determine what changes, if any, need to be made on game days.

"With the things that's going on in society it makes you think twice about a lot doing a lot of things, you know?" said parent Naterricka Gibson.

Hopson says he will periodically meet with both the sheriff and police director to tweak whatever needs tweaking. If you have any information on this shooting call (901) 528-CASH.
