Mississippi Department of Corrections officials say an inmate was fatally beaten by another inmate Sunday night at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Pearl.

According to MDOC, inmate Tyler Smith is accused of killing Clifton Majors in the maximum security area of the prison. Smith reportedly admitted to fatally beating Majors and told MDOC investigators he was scared Majors and others would harm him.

A preliminary investigation revealed no weapon was involved.

Majors was serving an 18-year sentence for burglary of a residence out of Lamar County, armed robbery out of Marion County and conspiracy out of Sunflower County.

Smith is serving a two-year sentence for two counts of grand larceny from Itawamba County, according to MDOC.

The incident is under investigation.
