JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The driver in a crash that killed a 12-year-old boy and injured four other children has been arrested on multiple charges.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Edward Sullivan, 53, was arrested Friday afternoon at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

He was transported to the Rankin County Jail and charged with reckless driving, no proof of insurance, driving while license suspended, driving under the influence, five counts of DUI felony child endangerment, two counts of DUI mayhem and one counts of DUI by death.

Jonathan Hicks, 12, died from injuries sustained in the accident with an 18-wheeler on Highway 49 near Star Sept. 1.

The four other children -- ages 11, 10, 5 and 7 -- injured in the crash were treated and released from the hospital. Sullivan was critically injured in the crash.

Sullivan was reportedly taking the children to a nearby store. He is the children's grandmother's ex-husband and is a convicted sex offender on probation.

Sullivan's court ordered probation contains 11 conditions, but it doesn't prohibit Sullivan from being around children.

The parents of two of the children say they have no idea why he showed up at the grandmother's home the weekend of the crash. The children were spending the night there at the time.

Jennifer Rodgers, the mother of 7-year-old Valerie and 5-year-old Shelby, cried as she expressed the love for her injured children.

"Nobody understands the feeling," said Jennifer Rodgers. "When you get that phone call. It's your baby and you have to look at them laying in there and if you take one of my children and if the good Lord takes one of mine take both, because I'm coming with them. You can't do that to me, my kids have never done anything wrong."

Jennifer and Josh Rodgers expressed outrage and anger -- unable to comprehend why the grandmother allowed their two girls and three other young cousins to get in the car with Edward Sullivan.

Josh Rodgers said they hadn't seen Sullivan in a long time and expressed anger with his mother.

"I didn't know he was there," said Rodgers. "If I knew he was there, they wouldn't have been there."

"I never would have let them go there if I had known they would leave with a sex offender never," said Jennifer Rodgers." "That's not who we are, and I want to get it out there that would have never happened and now we have all this to go through."

The Rodgers say the three other cousins were recently abandoned by their own mother and living with their grandmother.
