The Jackson Zoo was denied accreditation Sunday by the Association of Zoo and Aquariums Accreditation Committee at the annual conference in Kansas City, Missouri. But the Zoo is appealing and remains accredited during the appeal process.
The commission appears concerned about the timing and approval of the Zoo's $1.4-million for the current operating year. That money was promised, but had not been approved when the Accreditation Committee met and discussed the matter. The money was approved Thursday morning when the Jackson City Council approved its $502.4 million budget, however.
An accreditation appeal will be likely now be filed.
Zoo attendance is down 35 percent over the past three years. A slight uptick was seen last year, when the zoo added a splash pad.
