Ex-Vicksburg mayor pleaded guilty to bribery

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Former Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield has pleaded guilty to bribery for seeking $10,000 in cash in exchange for a city contract.

U.S. Attorney Gregory Davis says Winfield pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Natchez. He faces up to 10 years at sentencing, scheduled for Nov. 19.

Davis says Winfield agreed to never again seek public office.

A criminal complaint says a confidential FBI informant called Winfield on July 17, 2012, to discuss "pre-event disaster contracts" with the city.

It says the two met at a Jackson restaurant the next day, and the informant asked Winfield what it would take to get the contract. Prosecutors say Winfield asked for $10,000 and agreed to take half the money up front and the rest after the contract was awarded.
