PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Perrysburg Township Police Department is tracking crime trends and criminal behavior like never before, even posting crime statistics online. One type of crime has recently kept police busy.

Police just formed a new criminal interdiction unit that they believe will make a big impact on crime.

"When we start seeing trends in our various stats, we'll be able to have a group that's gonna be able to come together and devise a plan," explained Mike Gilmore, deputy chief of Perrysburg Township police.

Police recently started publishing crime stats online. In August, the biggest problem was prescription pills. Police seized nearly $25,000 worth during traffic stops. According to police, criminals are transporting the drugs up and down Interstate 75.

"Oxycontin. There's all kinds of different pills that we're seeing," said Gilmore.

Detailed crime stats will be posted every month in order to give people a sense of what type of crimes are happening the most.

"My husband is overseas, so I'm here alone. I find it informative to know what's going on in the neighborhood," said Yvonne Juhasz, a township resident.

This new crime unit will track criminal behavior based on crime statistics in order to keep a step ahead.

"Our goal is to keep that criminal element from coming into the township. That's our goal. And if they come this way, we're going to catch them," said Gilmore.
