MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A 29-year-old Memphis man is charged with attempted first degree murder after a shooting outside Halle stadium.

Shelby County Sheriff's deputies arrested 29-year-old Vernon Walton on the scene. Sheriff's deputies say Walton started complaining of chest pains after he was taken into custody. He remains at The MED under doctor's care.

Investigators say he shot his 24-year-old ex-girlfriend, Monique Smith, five times in a targeted attack that happened to coincide with a vigil for a Ridgeway High School basketball player who recently died.

One of the shots hit Smith in the face. Smith got a restraining order against Walton days earlier.

The vigil was held at Halle Stadium after a football game.

Deputies say neither Smith nor Walton were at the game or the vigil, but that Smith had just pulled into the parking lot when Walton pulled in behind her and shot her through her car window.

Ridgeway student, Ashley Jackson, says Walton rammed her car just before the shooting.

"He bumped into me. He parked right in front of me and got out and started shooting," said Jackson. "It scared me 'cause, what if like he turned around my way ... And me and my cousin both could've died. It's heartbreaking."

Deputies working the game and vigil say they heard the shots and then saw a man with a gun running away. They caught him after a short foot chase.

"We made an arrest and from what I understand the young lady looks like she may survive this," said Shelby County public information officer Chip Washington. "Domestic violence is a very tough issue, as we all know. It's becoming more and more prevalent every day."

Smith remains hospitalized at The MED. She is listed in fair condition.
