BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It has been five years since a devastating accident for a Rankin County family. They were hit head on by a drunk driver who was also high on cocaine. Nine year old Graceyn Thrailkill, who was four years old at the time, was left paralyzed, and for a while both she and her mother were in wheelchairs.

They recently won a lawsuit against the company that made the defective  booster seat Graceyn was riding in, but we have learned it may be years before the family sees a dime.

Graceyn Thrailkill is in the 4th grade. Graceyn's mother says she is treated like the rest of her family; sisters who are 14 and 11 and a baby sister and brother, twins, who are two.

Holly Thrailkill says she is now a single parent and the main caregiver for Graceyn who has been through nine surgeries in the last year.

"She just had two surgeries," said Holly. "She had a spinal fusion, which usually they like to do that when they're in their teens and she's nine, so. Her curve was so severe they had to go ahead and do it so it wouldn't compromise her heart and lungs, and her internal organs."

When a jury awarded the family $52 million earlier this month, half of the judgement was against the drunk driver, Gann, who is serving 40 years in prison.

"Actually, in her criminal trial she was ordered to pay a half a million dollars and of course we never got that either", Thrailkill told us.

The other half is against Dorel Juvenile Group, the maker of the booster seat that failed to protect Graceyn. A part that only cost 15 cents would have made all the difference. The company is appealing the case to the State Supreme Court.

"No money has changed hands. We just can say we won right now", said Thrailkill.

Graceyn attends school for half a day.  A teacher also comes to their home.  She has been on a feeding tube since June.

"I just like to be cheerful and look at the bright side," said Graceyn.

Friday is a big day at Highland Bluff Elementary in Brandon. September is Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month and Graceyn's classmates will dress in green, the official color, for Going Green For Graceyn.

"I'm the same as everybody else but I just do things differently," added Graceyn.

Graceyn's medical bills  so far, exceed a million dollars, and she will need medical care the rest of her life.
