Statins might have additional benefit

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by millions of people may offer a secondary benefit. An extensive review of research suggests statins may prevent dementia when they're taken for more than a year.

This finding comes from Johns Hopkins researchers who pooled results from 16 studies on statin usage.

Last year, the Food and Drug Administration changed the labels on the drugs to warn of the potential for memory loss with short-term use. But the researchers found no connection between statins and memory problems and in fact, found a reduced risk for dementia.

This review of research is from Johns Hopkins, and is published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
