Sheriff department's technology upgrades to improve service

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Patrol cars equipped with laptop computers are nothing new in Memphis and elsewhere, but it is new across the river in Crittenden County. It is also something officials believe is long overdue.

The Crittenden County Sheriff's Department just took a huge step forward with the installation of computer terminals in its patrol cars.

"It gives the patrolmen a lot of access to information out on the road that they previously didn't have," said Crittenden Co. Sheriff's Department Chief Mike Callender.

That includes better access to criminal databases like NCIC or those that show sex offender information.

"The more information you have out on the road dealing with someone, the less surprises you have," said Callender.

Previously, a deputy would have to go through dispatch to check on something like an outstanding warrant.

"Let's just say we had a jail escape, and before there was no way to get them a picture of the person," said Callender.

From an efficiency standpoint, deputies can now file reports remotely as well, which will save them a trip to the sheriff's department at the end of a shift. That helps in a county where deputies patrol hundreds of square miles.

"Now it can all be done on the computer, downloaded from the car," said Callender.

The new computers are part of a department-wide technology upgrade. The cost of which was not immediately available.
