Former Carroll Co. deputy sentenced in 2011 shooting

A former Carroll County sheriff's deputy has been sentenced to two years in prison for shooting into an occupied vehicle in 2011.

John Beck, 32, was sentenced Friday by Circuit Judge Jannie Lewis.

Beck pleaded guilty October 4 to one count of shooting into a vehicle and one count of malicious mischief.

Beck and another deputy had set up a roadblock near the Black Hawk community in Carroll County on March 9, 2011. When a vehicle avoided the roadblock, the deputies followed it into Holmes County.

After that vehicle crashed, deputies tried to question two men. One of the men drove away, and Beck shot nine times into the back of that car. No one was killed.
