Man shot in robbery attempt dies

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A man shot in the abdomen and chest Sunday evening during an attempted robbery has died. Harsharan Bajaj, 62, died during surgery at UMC about 3 this morning.

Bajaj was the owner of the ANP gas station at 3376 Medgar Evers Boulevard, where the attempted robbery occurred.

An employee, who did not want to be identified, says power went out at the station around 8 p.m. Sunday night and they went to the back of the store to check the meter. A black male, wearing all black, approached them and demanded money, then shot Bajaj.

"Hit him beside the head, shot him in the arm. He fell, then shot him in the stomach. It was ridiculous man that man didn't get one red penny. Sam had four dollars in his billfold," said one eyewitness.

The suspect knocked Bajaj down and demanded money.

Surinder Singh who is a spokesman for the Indian community helped bring awareness to a string of Indian store robberies in recent years.

"Whoever did it that means he has no respect for life and that's very disheartening," says Singh.

Police are searching for a black male with a slender build wearing a white t-shirt and black pants.
