JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Callaway High School mom who asked not to be identified says her daughter, a sophomore who has Down Syndrome, was sexually assaulted in a school bathroom last Wednesday afternoon.

She says the perpetrator is a 19-year-old male student enrolled in JROTC, who is also a special needs student.

"I want him locked up and arrested," said the mother. "He's 19, she's 16. No one has called me. That's why I'm talking to you all. No one has called me, I'm shocked."

The mom says she only found out about it when a relative, who is also a student at the school, informed her. That relative engaged in a text exchange with a family friend at the school. The text exchange doesn't make it clear whether students, even those involved, took the incident seriously. But it does seem apparent that something occurred.

The mom took her daughter to the UMC Emergency Room, a thorough examination was done, and a Jackson Police Officer took a report. The mother also had a meeting with school officials the next day, but she's angry at what she calls the lack of supervision for her special needs child.

"She has to be assisted," the mother told us. "Special needs students have to be assisted. So does that young gentleman." (My daughter) was in there by herself alone. Where was the assistant she was supposed to be assisted by, who gets paid $15 an hour?"

Late Tuesday afternoon Jackson Public Schools released the following statement:  Jackson Public Schools and Jackson Police are investigating an alleged incident that occurred October 9, 2013 involving the sexual assault or encounter of a student by another student at Callaway High School. Once the investigation is complete JPS will take the appropriate action.

Jackson Police say their investigation is active. They're working in conjunction with a child advocacy group.
