(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Police Department Director says uncertainty remains whether an attempted murder suspect or officers started a fire that ended a violent standoff.
"We didn't intentionally set a fire ... that I can say for a fact on that," said Armstrong.
But Armstrong now says chemical agents possibly thrown into the house may have sparked the blaze that dramatically ended an hours-long standoff with a dangerous suspect who was later found dead inside.
"That's one of the tools we use to try to get him to voluntarily come out of the house—hopefully without harming himself or anyone else. In this particular situation that just didn't happen," said
Armstrong says the shooting of this officer and another proves suspect Aaron Dumas meant to do harm.
"I can't sit here and say I'm 100 percent pleased with the outcome in its totality. I would have wished for different results," said Armstrong.
Director Armstrong says the two injured officers, Tim Jackson and Paul Hutchison, are both home resting and will return to the TACT unit as soon as they have recovered.
