The B.A.S.S. Masters fishing tournament in Ridgeland began with a moment of silence in honor of James "Jimmy" Johnson. The Texas Pro Fisherman died after being shot during a robbery at the Motel 6 in Jackson Sunday.
Shaun Brown,17, of Jackson is currently being held on capital murder charges in the murder.
Competitors say he was dedicated to his family and the sport of fishing. He was ranked 11th among a field of over 200 competitors coming into the tournament.
Scott McGehee from Madison says, "It takes a dedicated person to be out here in bad weather. Jimmy had the same love and passion the rest of us had."
Organizers of the event say they won't let the murder discourage them from bringing it back to Mississippi.
The tournament director Chris Bowes says, "Certainly were thinking about Jimmy and his family, and certainly our prayers are sent to them."
Ridgeland police are heavily patrolling the tournament site at Madison landing. They're also promoting personal and property safety to the anglers.
